Wanna be able to trem
pick like Dick Dale or just improve your trem
picking?
Check out this lesson by Brian P. Harred.
IT REALLY WORKS!!! True, controlled
trem picking is achieved by this:
First, think of a down stroke. Get your guitar;
you got it in your hands? Good. Grasp your pick
as you usually do and start doing down strokes on
the string of your choice. Right now the low E
might be a good one to work with .
Start doing down strokes as fast as you can;
you will notice that you are just using your
right hand as usual, not forcing with your whole
arm. Keeping your arm a bit taught and
"springy", keep doing the down strokes.
Every now and then, you might accidentally catch
the string on your way back up to do your next down stroke...which is "exactly" what
you want to do.
Actually, keeping your THUMB a little
"stiff" as opposed to your arm will
probably do the trick; but the principal is to
concentrate on those down strokes and after
noticing how it feels to "accidentally"
hit the string in question on the way back up,
then do it intentionally!!! If you do this right,
you should notice INSTANT improvement. Soon after
achieving the right form, you will begin to
notice the power of this technique and that is
"control". Soon, instead of
concentrating just on the down stroke and
"accidentally" hitting the string every
time on the way back up, you will make
adjustments with your pick and hand and do it
intentionally. It's all about the way it
"feels" to do it.
Murf's comment: I tried this
out and it worked immediately. With a little
practice you can go from regular picking, trem
picking , and back to regular picking almost instantaneously.
